At 11:25 p.m. on February 6, 2002, the Cypress Creek Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to a motor vehicle accident with entrapment at Grant and Spring Cypress. Responding units found a vehicle on it's side completely wrapped around a large pine tree. Assessment of the vehicle yielded two deceased male occupants. After determining that the occupants were deceased the Fire Department stood by until the Harris County Sheriff's Office of the Medical Examiner completed their investigations. The vehicle was pulled off the tree by a wrecker. The front of the vehicle was then secured to the tree by a chain while the wrecker used his winch to straighten out the vehicle. Hydraulic cutters were then used to remove the roof of the vehicle to gain access to the occupants. The bodies of the occupants were then lifted out of the vehicle and transferred to the custody of the Harris County Medical Examiners Office. The last fire department vehicle cleared the scene at 04:46 a.m. on February 7, 2002.

The investigation revealed that the vehicle was west bound on Grant Road just east of the intersection with Spring Cypress. The driver was traveling at a high rate of speed, driving recklessly, weaving in and out of traffic, and passing other vehicles. The driver lost control, leaving the road and hitting a power pole head on. The force of the impact sheared off the power pole below ground level causing 13,000 volt power lines to fall to the ground. The vehicle then continued on approximately 50 feet, turning on it's side and striking a large pine tree on its roof immediately above the driver and passenger. The remaining speed/energy caused the vehicle to completely wrap around the tree. The violence of the collision was so great that the floor board of the vehicle was torn apart and the roof and trunk of the vehicle were touching on the opposite side of the tree. Somewhere in this chain of events the occupants sustained fatal injuries and were killed. The driver was 20 years old and had a BAL of 0.18, the passenger was 27 years old and had a BAL of 0.26. The legal limit for BAL in Texas is 0.08. Given the extreme nature of this incident it is very fortunate that no one else was injured or killed. There was heavy traffic on both Grant and Spring Cypress. The incident occurred just prior to the vehicle going through the intersection of Spring Cypress.
